1998

Capacity : 1100

Sisters onsite : 11

Teachers onsite : 36

Just two years after the Sisters of Mary launched their first village in Guatemala, they opened a second location and the boys were transferred to a new Boystown site in Zona 6. Now the Sisters have the capacity to open up opportunities for 1,100 boys to break free from the cycle of poverty.

In Zona 6 the boys are educated in a variety of subjects with a special emphasis on math and the sciences. Furthermore, they receive training in subjects including carpentry, welding, computing, auto mechanics and electronics. These are skills relevant to local job opportunities, so that the boys will leave school equipped with skills and trades to gain stable and long-term employment.

The Sisters network constantly with local employers to pave the way for future jobs for the boys and they receive some support from these local organizations with specialized teaching – in auto mechanics for example from Toyota.

In addition to their studies and training, the boys at Zona 6 enjoy a range of hobbies and extracurricular activities, particularly football, basketball, athletics, handball, dancing and music. The boys are also enthusiastic about art and enjoy spending time learning about their native Mayan culture.

All of this is only possible through the generosity of people like you. Every child deserves a good start in life and with your help we can continue to make this a reality.
