Sister Michaela

by | Mar 28, 2019

It is with deep sadness that we share the news that Sister Michaela Kim passed away yesterday. She died peacefully in Busan, South Korea, surrounded by many of her fellow Sisters of Mary. Funeral services will be held this Saturday, March 30.

Sister Michaela spent her life joyfully serving the poor and sick, as well as her fellow sisters. She was one of the first women to join Father Aloysius Schwartz in caring for the poor and sick in Korea in the aftermath of the Korean war. Father Al chose Sister Michaela to succeed him as the head of the Sisters of Mary following his death.

Under her leadership and example, the Villages for Children established by Father Al in South Korea, the Philippines, and Mexico spread to Guatemala, Brazil, and Honduras, providing thousands of additional children around the world the opportunity to break free from the extreme poverty into which they were born.

Sr. Michaela led the congregation from 1992 until 2010, and remained actively involved in the work of the sisters until 2017. Her humility, dedication, and courage touched so many hearts and transformed the lives of tens of thousands of children and their families.

We are so grateful to Sister Michaela for the time and the love she gave so selflessly. Our organization, the programs we support, and the children we serve are forever indebted to incredible woman.

Please pray for the soul of Sister Michaela and all the Sisters of Mary during this difficult time.
