Sisters of Mary Tanzania

Poverty in Tanzania is severe and particularly impacts children who suffer from chronic malnutrition, which in turn affects their physical and mental development. Some progress has been made in the country to reduce poverty, but the high population growth rate and lack of access to education mean that the number of poor is not declining. Poverty is more common for women. 95% of Tanzanian girls do not graduate from high school.

In late 2017, the Sisters of Mary accepted an invitation from the authorities in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania to begin a new education program in the country. When the Sisters began their work, they saw terrible situations of poverty and deprivation amongst the youngest and most vulnerable. Without education, children, particularly girls, have little to no hope. Under the loving care of their Mother Sisters, the girls have the chance to escape poverty permanently and create a brighter future for themselves and their communities. They receive a safe place to live, full time care, a quality accredited education, technical training, access to medical and dental care, balanced nutrition, and unconditional motherly love from their Mother Sisters, helping them into an independent adult life and a productive future. The children live together, make friends, attend classes together, pray, and play together. They enjoy sports, music, and art, and share their lives with one another, forming friendship bonds that last them a lifetime. With the help and support of our donors, we hope to further develop Girlstown, Tanzania with increased capacity to uplift more young girls in need of our care .The Sisters of Mary also maintain a daycare center and a vocational training center nearby.
