TEGUCIGALPA GIRLSTOWN – HONDURAS

OUR PROGRAMS IN HONDURAS

Upon seeing the dire need of the poor children of Honduras, His Eminence Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga, Archbishop of Tegucigalpa, invited the Sisters of Mary to establish a Girlstown and Boystown there.

In 2011, three sisters were sent to start our charity programs. With the help of the President and First Lady of Honduras as well as other government and church officials, a parcel of land was donated by the Tegucigalpa city government. A two-story building was built right away, initially providing dormitories, classrooms and workshops for our first students. The first 80 girls to attend the school were accepted in February 2012. Meanwhile, the construction of the main building started. It consists of 4 stories for dormitories and classrooms, gymnasium, and soccer field.

The Girlstown in Tegucigalpa was inaugurated on November 21, 2012.

A few years later, a swimming pool and another two-story workshop building were added. At present, there are 712 girls who are provided for with food, clothing, shelter, as well as middle and high school education. The vocational training includes: dressmaking, culinary arts, English, and advanced computer courses. Though their 5-year stay with us, these young girls not only learn academics and technical skills but also gain confidence and develop their personality. They learn how to help one another, and prepare themselves for a bright future.

In April 2015, our first promotion started high school.
