Girlstown, Chalco, Mexico

I’m Sister Graciela.  I’m a Mother Sister serving in Girlstown, Chalco, Mexico at Villa de las Niñas. Prior to coming to Villa de las Niñas I was a Mother Sister in Guadalajara, Mexico Boystown. A typical day for me is getting up at 5 AM, usually a bit sleepy, but with a large desire to serve God and do the most possible. I attend Holy Mass, have breakfast with the children, engage in cleaning, overlook homework, and speak with the children. After they go to class, I pass from classroom to classroom to make sure no teacher is absent and then I go to the convent to attend the Holy Hour. I help with laundry, kitchen-work & nursing work. After class I work with the children gardening and with games & sports. Each afternoon at 4:30 PM it’s time to run before dinner. We pray the Rosary together then it’s time for study, to do homework, etc. After that, prayers are said before going to bed. I make sure no-one is awake and head down for my own sleep.

Something I admire about the children I care for is that they’re very optimistic; they joke and encourage each other; they encourage me too. The best thing about being a Sister of Mary is that many life problems which seem to grant young people no future or hope are overcome in every respect. When seeing the young peoples’ total change and such positive results there is such a great satisfaction that I say to myself, “my late nights and work are worth it, and thank God that he heard my prayers”.

People should support the Sisters of Mary because when we help a child, we help an entire family, and that family, in turn, influences their community. A child who is given the opportunity to study is one vagabond less; they’re liberated from being a delinquent or drug addict. Not only that, but they become a link in the chain of doing incremental good.
