Guardian Angels made it possible for Merry Joy, (R), to come and live at our Children's Village in Cavite, not far from Manila, Philippines. Before, she lived in one of these shacks, built on what was formerly a municipal rubbish dump, called "Happy Land." Not a very happy place for a child to live! Next to Merry Joy are Sister Cecilia and Merry Joy's mother and baby sister.

How Can I Say "NO!"?
|
You see, I just find it completely impossible to say "no" to a child who comes to
us hungry and destitute, and has no chance for an education.
So we keep on building more and more homes for boys and girls. And we keep
on saying, "Yes!" -- and these youngsters become our absolute and total responsibility, as
we provide them with a bed of their very own, and clean clothes, and school uniforms,
and nourishing food, an education, and ... love.
Then, when a youngster finally graduates and leaves us to make a life of his or her own,
we rejoice and cry with them, because we know we're going to miss them, yet - there's
always another little child to take their place.
It seems like we never quite catch up with our financial needs, and that's why we so
urgently need to find more Guardian Angels - wonderful and precious angels of mercy -
so that we can be here for desperate children in their hour of greatest need.

These two girls, pictured with J. F. Vita, World Villages for Children International Development Director, were selected to live a new life in one of our Children's Villages. The houses in their "neighbourhood" are built on stilts over the Manila Bay, with holes cut in the floors to use as toilets, with the raw sewage floating beneath the walkways. Their parents are "squatters" simply because they are too poor to afford a proper house of their own.

And I'm positive that you'll love being a Guardian Angel!
|
Because each and every month you'll receive from me:
- A little note introducing you to a child who, without a Guardian Angel, would be living a life of misery and would be hungry and sick, and never have a chance for an education.
- A personality profile of that child, giving his or her age, family background (although some facts are changed to protect their privacy), progress in school and ambitions.
- One, two, three or maybe even more pictures of the child - perhaps eating breakfast, or doing chores, or playing with friends, or doing homework.
Month in and month out, our young people will come into your home. Of course, they won't know who you are, but they will know that somewhere, someone loves them enough to share their blessings.

|
|
|
Just look at them smile! And for good reason. School is out for the day, and they have clean clothes to wear, and nourishing food and know they will sleep safely in their own bed at night. And all because of their Guardian Angels!

|
And what does it cost to be a Guardian Angel?
|
That's up to you! We don't have any monthly dues or set amount that you have
to give. You choose to send a gift that's practical for you.
And you don't have to send a gift each month, even though we certainly
appreciate it, if you can do so.
In fact, our Guardian Angels who send regular monthly gifts are a true blessing,
because it helps me plan our budget, because I have to shop for groceries just like you do.
(The only difference, in fact, between you and me is that when you shop for
groceries you can probably get it all in one shopping trolley. I have to have truckloads of food to feed my hungry kids!) And yet - we care for these kids one at a time, and they all receive special attention.

This is Dion. Thanks to our Guardian Angels she no longer fears what tomorrow may bring. She has a future! She studies hard, does her chores without complaining, and loves to dress in brightly coloured clothes.

|
A child like Dion, for example
|
When she was just two years old, her father was killed in a civil war, and beaten
to death right in front of her mother and brothers. Her mother fell into a state of shock, and cried and laughed and talked without making any sense. She never recovered.
So Dion and her brothers went to live with an uncle and even though he tried his best,
the children still didn't have enough food to eat, and he couldn't buy school uniforms or pencils or paper.
Then one day her uncle learned about our Children's Village, and brought her here to
us, and now we are totally responsible for her. If she went back to live with her uncle, she would probably end up begging on a street corner or maybe even starving.
But here she is, getting three square meals a day and a roof over her head, and an
excellent education, and she'll have a chance to break free of a life of poverty and heartache.
And if you become a Guardian Angel, you can help make that happen for another child.

|
|
And you'll receive a small token of my appreciation!
|
Finally, I'll be sending you - from my heart to yours -- your personal and special
Guardian Angel pin. And I'll encourage you to wear it with pride, because God has promised each of us that, when we need him most, his angel -- our own very special Guardian Angel -- will be there to help and comfort.
